Kuongezeka kwa joto kunaweza kuharakisha mabadiliko ya hali ya hewa kwa kupunguza kiwango cha kaboni dioksidi iliyohifadhiwa kwenye mabwawa na kuongeza methane wanayotoa, utafiti mpya unaonyesha.
Mabwawa madogo, matatizo makubwa ya hali ya hewa
Mabwawa madogo yanaweza kuishia kuwa na athari mbaya kwa hali ya hewa ya Dunia yanapopata joto, kulingana na wanasayansi kutoka Chuo Kikuu cha Exeter na Chuo Kikuu cha Malkia Mary cha London. Utafiti huu ulifanya jaribio ambapo walipasha joto idadi ya mabwawa madogo kwa digrii 4 hadi 4 kwa muda wa miaka saba ili kusoma athari ambazo zingekuwa nazo kwa uzalishaji wa gesi chafu na uwezo wake wa kunasa kaboni dioksidi (CO2).
Mabwawa huhifadhi CO2 na kutoa methane
Mabwawa madogo yana jukumu kubwa katika mfumo wa ikolojia kwani huhifadhi kaboni dioksidi (CO2) na kutoa gesi kama methane angani.
Baada ya miaka saba ya kufanya jaribio hili, uwezo wa bwawa kunyonya kaboni dioksidi (CO2) ulipunguzwa kwa karibu nusu, wakati kutolewa kwa methane karibu mara mbili. Matokeo yanaonyesha kuwa kuongezeka kwa joto la mabwawa (kwa sababu ya ongezeko la joto Ulimwenguni) kunaweza kuharakisha mabadiliko ya hali ya hewa.
Mabwawa na maziwa vyanzo vikubwa vya methane na CO2
Maziwa na mabwawa hufunika karibu asilimia 4 ya uso wa Dunia (ukiondoa maeneo yaliyofunikwa na barafu na karatasi za barafu) lakini ni vyanzo vikubwa vya methane na CO2 kwa angahewa. Kulingana na utafiti huo, mabwawa madogo kuliko mita moja ya mraba yana jukumu la kutoa karibu asilimia 40 ya uzalishaji wote wa methane kutoka kwa maji ya bara.
"Hili ni jaribio la kwanza kuchunguza athari za muda mrefu za ongezeko la joto katika mifumo ya ikolojia ya majini," alisema mwandishi mkuu Profesa Gabriel Yvon-Durocher, wa Taasisi ya Mazingira na Uendelevu kwenye Chuo Kikuu cha Exeter's Penryn Campus huko Cornwall.
"Kwa kuzingatia mchango mkubwa wa mabwawa madogo katika utoaji wa gesi chafuzi, ni muhimu kuelewa jinsi wanaweza kukabiliana na ongezeko la joto duniani. " Matokeo yetu yanaonyesha kuwa ongezeko la joto linaweza kubadilisha kimsingi usawa wa kaboni wa mabwawa madogo kwa miaka kadhaa, kupunguza uwezo wao wa kunyonya kaboni dioksidi na kuongeza uzalishaji wa methane.
"Athari zilizoimarishwa za ongezeko la joto la majaribio ambazo tumeona kwenye mabwawa ni tofauti na zile tunazoziona kwa kawaida ardhini, ambapo athari kubwa za joto zinaonekana kupungua kwa muda mrefu," Profesa Yvon-Durocher alisema.
"Athari hii ya kuharakisha katika mabwawa, ambayo inaweza kuwa na athari kubwa kwa mabadiliko ya hali ya hewa, kwa sasa haijahesabiwa katika Jopo la Serikali za Mabadiliko ya Tabianchi mifano ya Mabadiliko ya Tabianchi kwa sasa."
Karatasi hiyo, yenye kichwa "Ongezeko la joto la muda mrefu huongeza mabadiliko katika mzunguko wa kaboni wa mabwawa ya majaribio", imechapishwa katika jarida la Nature Climate Change.
