For those who followed the full Australian Open and read my previous article, you already know that this year was the time for the underdogs to shine. Congratulations to Stanislas Wawrinka and Li Na for their victories in the men’s and women’s sections, respectively. In the final match against Rafael Nadal, many people expected Nadal to win the Australian Open and thought he had it in the bag. But honestly, I knew he didn’t. Nadal sustained a severe blister injury on his feet, yet he refused to quit the Australian Open. This situation already put him at a handicap and a clear disadvantage.
Stanislas was Surprised at his on Win and The Open
Stanislas himself admitted that he didn’t expect to win the Open. He said, “To win a Slam, to be number three [in the rankings], both for me is a big surprise. It’s an amazing feeling. I saw Roger winning so many Grand Slams in the past, so now it’s my turn to win one. If you look at the 10 past years, except Del Potro, it’s only the top four guys who were winning all the Grand Slams.”
And he’s right. For the past ten years, the Grand Slam titles have only been won by Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Andy Murray, and Novak Djokovic. This year was the first year since 2009 that a tennis player outside of the “big four” has won a Grand Slam title.
This means that my predictions from the last article weren’t so far off.
The Australian Open Women Winners
In the women’s section, Li Na really rose to the challenge this year. She has been in the Australian Open finals twice before, but this year was her time to not only reach the finals but also win the Grand Slam title. In an intense match against Dominika Cibulkova, Li Na emerged victorious.
Although I say that this is the underdog’s Open, I have a feeling that if she were paired against players like Azarenka, Sharapova, or Williams, she would be able to hold her own against them. This is not her first Grand Slam title. She won the French Open in 2011.
Aside from her victory, I think she gave one of the best winner’s speeches I’ve heard in a while. It was light-hearted, humble, grateful, and humorous. She didn’t forget to thank her agent, coach, and physiotherapist, and even teased her husband a little.
“So thanks for him giving up everything just to travel with me, be my hitting partner, fix the drinks, fix the racket. So thanks a lot, you are a nice guy. Also, you are so lucky to find me.”
So, for all you tennis fans and hopefully paperless eco-activists, what do you think about the wins in the women’s and men’s sections of the Australian Open? Did Wawrinka win on merit or was luck a part of it?
